Published in April 2024, Naming the Thing documents the 2023 Freelands Studio Fellowship. The book brings together studio conversations with all six of the 2023 Freelands Studio Fellows across Belfast, Manchester, Aberdeen, Brighton, Bath, and Swansea. Edited by Natasha Cox, Freelands Artist Development Curator the publication also features an introduction with Cox and Dr HenryWard, Director of Freelands Foundation, in which they discuss the roots of fellowship programme and some of the experiences the current cohort of Fellows have had.
Daniel Pettitt, who held the Freelands Painting Fellowship at the University of Brighton in 2022, is in conversation with painter Michael Clarence, the 2023 Brighton Fellow. Speaking in Micheal’ studio in the Painting Department at Brighton, the two discuss their attitudes to painting, the impact of teaching, their experiences of the fellowship and what it means to relocate an established practice to a new place.
