Daniel Pettitt is included in Everything That Happens Will Happen Today at KARST, Plymouth, on view from 25 May to 20 July 2024. Bringing together four distinct painters, Bernadette Kerrigan, Chris Martin, Daniel Pettitt, and EJ Hauser, the exhibition explores the formal and informal ways each artist makes sense of the world through painting.
The exhibition title, taken from David Byrne and Brian Eno's 2008 collaborative album, serves as a thematic anchor, prompting notions around the interconnectedness of creative endeavours. It can also be understood as a poetic declaration on the possibilities available when making a painting: intuition, design, chance, technique, and intent all coming into play. Rather than attempting to define a movement, the exhibition brings into focus the social relationships, research interests, and ways in which these painters interconnect.

Pettitt's contributions develop his ongoing interest in allusive and speculative abstraction. Abstract passages of gestural mark-making, hints at figuration, fragments of found imagery, and textual impositions blend into what he describes as 'provisional fields and partial images'. Elements support one another while threatening to eradicate one another, every gesture met with its counter. Marks pile up atop and alongside, making surfaces into a patchwork of zones, legible as laid out across an expanse, not unlike a map.
